Realignment... still with coconut

Last year, while considering people to come onto a project, one friend tried to dissuade us from someone because he had too much going on. "No. He's perfect," said another. "Those with the most going on know how to get things done."At the time I paused and considered the wisdom. A year later, I hope to see that truth.

My cool 20 hour/week job has become 30 hours. All's good, the communications work for homeless families important, the people I've met amazing.

My YA fiction writing... I generally start days with an hour of writing and I've been meeting my realigned goal of a chapter every two weeks instead of every one. And my coconut coffee has become sacred. Early Tuesday morning I grind the beans and cinnamon the coconut milk for a longer pre-work writing session. And Saturday... a long luxurious morning to afternoon of writing.

It's interesting how we structure our writing lives. I love writing. Even when I'm stuck, it's relaxing. And the coconut coffee... It keeps bringing me back to my writing table.

What do you do to keep you at the writing table?

(not coconut coffee, but still...)

  1. I can't stop writing. The hard part is making the time for it. With work, kids, life ... thank goodness for weekends.

  3. my sense of duty is what keeps me glued to the writing table :)
I've never tried coconut coffee, we don't have it here, but I do make a great coconut cake :)

  4. Coconut coffee sounds amazing. I'll have to look into that. The thrill of seeing the story grow and become more polished keeps me coming back. Sometimes a bribe of chocolate ....

  5. Keeping myself at the writing table is something I've been having trouble with. Usually it's the new ideas that motivate me--and participating in writing challenges to keep my on my toes can help if I'm really in a slump (such as now; looking forward to a June challenge I'll be participating in . . .).

  7. I don't have a set time to write, but I steal away to my desk as often as possible, even if only for short bursts. I like to keep a little bowl of M&Ms handy while I'm writing. I'm not a coffee drinker but coconut coffee does sound yummy.

  10. What keeps me writing? Every other Thursday meetings with my wise writer friend :) AND the fire in my belly about the stories I want to tell.

  11. I'm not a coffee fan, but that sounds seriously delicious. It would get me writing, too! Good for you that you set aside whatever time you can for your book! We do what we have to do. I've been trying to write at night, but I admit it doesn't always happen! Weekends are my fallback. Good luck with everything.

  12. Teaching full-time makes it tough to keep writing as part of my daily routine with all the grading and meetings, but I'm somehow managing 1K a day, and I can be proud of that. Keep on keepin' on, sir!

  13. I find the writing time does not come each day at the same time for me. But I feel inspired, a lot, to write. Inspired sounds so much better than compelled, right?!

Hoping you are heading to the east coast some time soon. I could use some Robert inspiration!

  14. I agree with you Robert: structure is so important in accomplishing anything. I'll have to try the coconut coffee but I usually start with tea and honey. Coffee doesn't happen till the afternoon. :)
