How We Go

A quick post before driving to the ferry. I LOVE these Washington state ferries. So smooth, so fast. Mountains behind us, islands beside us. I'm sure it'll be a great few days on Orcas Island... but all I want to do is write.
I try to work at least eight hours a day. Three to five is the fun stuff – writing and editing novel #2 and maybe working on scripts. The rest is industry research, correspondence... the stuff I have to do. The thing is, the fun stuff is really fun. I don't need a break from writing. I know these next few days will be beautiful. Hiking and all that feeds the soul... But so does writing and that's all I want to do right now.

So, how not to be a jerk and to appreciate everything and everyone and yet also write? Swiss cheese will be helpful (working within the holes of time around us), but still...

  2. I agree - vacay is great but it's so hard when writing is a passion/addiction! That pix is awesome. Someday I'll make it out west!

  4. You are so lucky to live around Puget Sound! One of the most beautiful places in the world. Man I miss it. Enjoy the San Juans!

  5. I feel the same way with vacations. I really thought I was the only one. So cool to know that I'm not.

I also love the Washington Ferries. And it might do you well to have a break and swiss cheese is always good. Well, I like Jarlsberg better--the holes are smaller.

  6. Thanks everyone for the well-wishing! Actually I mellowed out when I made my weekly goal before leaving for Orcas - new chapter for novel #2. My usual goal is a new chapter by Saturday night... it's Weds PM, could I get out another by Sat?

But I think the point of being here is to work on the soul. Man, is it beautiful here.

  7. ...the scenery you continue to post is breathtaking. Inspiration at every turn. I get to look out my window and see...retired neighbors with poop scoopers.

  8. Great pic! Schedule a certain amount of time for blog reading, blogging, industry stuff, etc. Use the other times to write. Who knows, that might work. If it doesn't, I never posted this.

  9. I've always wanted to visit there, it's so beautiful! I need more hours in the day to do all the things I want. Writing is one of the best times of the day, for sure!

  10. You've got to take care of that soul as it feeds everything you write. Sometimes writing helps feed the soul, and sometimes being in touch with some aspect of the physical world, in your case nature, feeds it. Well-fed souls are also well-kept.

  11. it sounds like you will have some great time, Rob!
I also try to work from 3 to 5 hours per day efficiently in my translating work, but sometimes I work 8 hours and more if I have a deadline.

  13. Elliot - Glad you like the pics. I'm also a sucker for palm trees like the amazing background of your blog.

Tracy - I think you're right on about scheduling time for industry research, writing, etc. That's the tough stuff, and what I need to do. The writing always makes room for itself.

    Jeffery - cheer for soul-feeding.

Dezmond - Deadlines do push us. Why I'm glad I have the chapter/week deadling for my WIP.

Jon - Thanks for asking about LUCKY: so far so good w/the chapter/week. I'm a little nervous about this week b/c the action for just this chapter has moved to a new location. Might take longer.

  14. My wife spent time in Washington when she was younger and still talks fondly of the scenery. Have fun. And I work as many hours as possibly, usually hour chunks at a time that add up to 3-5 hours a day.
